About Andrew

Andrew was first elected to represent the electorate of Boothby in March 1996 and re-elected in 1998, 2001, 2004 and November 2007. 

Andrew has lived and worked in Adelaide's inner southern suburbs for most of his life.

He grew up at Somerton Park and began his schooling at Paringa Park Primary School at North Brighton before moving to St Peter’s College. He studied Medicine at the University of Adelaide from 1985 to 1990.

In 1989, Andrew became President of the Adelaide Medical Students Society and later that year moved overseas to work as a volunteer at a mission hospital in Kwazulu/ Natal in South Africa.

On his return to Adelaide, Andrew completed his internship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and undertook basic surgical training there in 1992 and 1993.

In 1994, he was a surgical registrar in vascular surgery at the Repatriation General Hospital at Daw Park and a surgical registrar at the Breast Cancer Unit at Flinders Medical Centre.

It was around this time that Andrew acted on his keen interest in politics and in November 1994 was endorsed as the Liberal candidate for Boothby.

As a candidate, he continued to work in the medical field as a locum medical practitioner and a medical officer in Accident and Emergency at Flinders Medical Centre.

In addition to his medical studies, Andrew has completed an Economics degree at Flinders University, undertaking subjects in economics, international relations and Australian history and later also completed an MBA at the University of Adelaide.

His interest in the fields of medicine, economics and foreign affairs has been put to good use in a practical sense in Parliament.

In late 2003, Andrew was appointed as Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties, moving from his role as Chair of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Ageing.

In addition, Andrew has served on a number of other Parliamentary committees, including:

• Economics, Finance and Public Administration Standing Committee;
• Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade;
• Secretary, Treasury, Finance, Public Administration, Government Policy Committee; and
• Trade and Foreign Affairs Government Policy Committee.

Following the 2007 election, Andrew was appointed to the Opposition front bench and has held a number of portfolios including Employment Participation, Training and Sport. Currently he is the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Health Services, Health and Wellbeing.

Andrew works closely with other Shadow Ministers and colleagues to formulate Coalition policy in the area of skills and employment and is frequently meeting with key stakeholders in this area. 

On a personal front, Andrew is married to Kate and has two children.
